Work visas for Poland and the EU
A work visa may be the better option when you are only starting employment abroad, need entry for a specific job contract or are not yet applying for a TRC card. We explain the difference between a visa, a work permit and a residence card, and help choose the right route.
- When it fits best: first entry for work, short and medium-term employment, employer-based relocation plans.
- What matters: the country of destination, the work contract, the legal basis for stay and whether you will later switch to a TRC card in Poland.
- Documents: passport, employer documents, application forms, insurance and supporting documents depending on the country and procedure.
- Important: a visa and a residence card are not the same. In many cases a visa is only the first step before a temporary residence application in Poland.
Residence Card based on JDG
A residence permit based on sole proprietorship in Poland may be granted when the business is genuinely active, generates sufficient income or creates jobs. Such permits are usually issued for 1–3 years.
- Documents: application, photos, passport, PIT returns, bank statements and documents confirming turnover and income.
- ZUS and tax office: certificates showing no arrears are required.
- Also useful: contracts, insurance and proof of accommodation.
- Important detail: an unprofitable business significantly increases the risk of refusal.
JDG owners may later also apply for family reunification.
Student Residence Card
A student residence card is issued on the basis of studies at a Polish university, post-secondary school or another institution that gives a legal basis for stay. The first card is often granted for 15 months.
- Documents: application, confirmation of enrolment, student status, finances, accommodation and insurance.
- Work: during studies, legal work is possible without a separate permit within the applicable rules.
- Accommodation: rental agreement, registration or another proof of residence.
- Finances: you need to show funds for living costs and tuition.
